TROMSØ FORSVARSMUSEUM
Tromsø Syd – i sin nåværende beliggenhet – ble bygget som et kystartilleribatteri av den tyske marinen i 1940. Den ansvarlige offiseren hadde da alle kystbatteriene i Tromsø-området under sin kommando. Dette batteriet hadde tre 10,5 cm (ca. 4 tommer) kanoner, mens den mot sør, på Nordberg, inneholdt tre 21 cm (ca. 8 ln.) Kanoner.
Begge batteriene var ment å dekke Tromsøs sørflanke.
Tromsø Forsvars Museum har restaurert en kanonstilling utstyrt med to eks-tyske kanoner, et søkelys, en
kommandobunker (tre etasjer høy og ligger i de nærliggende åsene), og batteridempingen. Ammunisjonsdumpen huser en permanent utstilling fra slagskipet «Tirpitz», et skip som avsluttet dagene i november 1944 nær øya Hakøya – rett vest for Tromsø. For innbyggerne i lokalområdet var dette det mest dramatiske hendelse under krigen.
Tromsø Syd starter for øyeblikket den første fasen av et forsvarsmuseum som til slutt vil inneholde omfattende materiale om Tromsø`s militære historie og den tyske okkupasjonen av Norge.
TROMSØ DEFENSE MUSEUM
Tromsø South – in its current location – was built as a coastal artillery battery by the German navy in 1940. The responsible officer then had all the coastal batteries in the Tromsø area under his command. This battery had three 10.5 cm (approx. 4 inch) cannons, while to the south, on Nordberg, it contained three 21 cm (approx. 8 ln.) Cannons.
Both batteries were intended to cover Tromsø’s southern flank.
Tromsø Forsvars Museum has restored a cannon position equipped with two ex-German cannons, a searchlight, a
command bunker (three floors high and located in the nearby hills), and the battery damping. The ammunition dump houses a permanent exhibition from the battleship «Tirpitz», a ship that ended its days in November 1944 near the island of Hakøya – just west of Tromsø. For the inhabitants of the local area, this was the most dramatic event during the war.
Tromsø Syd is currently starting the first phase of a defense museum which will eventually contain extensive material about Tromsø`s military history and the German occupation of Norway.
