Vadsø museum – Ruija kvenmuseum er ansvarsmuseum for kvensk/norskfinsk historie og kultur, samtidig som museet formidler lokalhistorie for Vadsø og bygdene rundt.Vadsø kommune står i
en særstilling i Finnmark i forhold til bevart eldre førkrigsbebyggelse. Rundt 700 bygninger ov
erlevde andre verdenskrig. Museets ulike anlegg viser Vadsø som fiskevær, jordbruksområde, handels- og administrasjonsby. Tuomainengården i Ytrebyen og Bietilægården med kaianlegg i Indrebyen forteller om kvenenes byggeskikk og kultur. På Tuomainengården kan du hele året besøke boligen, fjøs, stall, smie, bakeri og sauna. På Esbensengården kan du oppleve 1800-tallets handelshus og få innblikk i byens overklasseliv. Kystkulturen vises på Kjeldsenbruket på Ekkerøy, med kaianlegg, rekefabrikk og trandamperi.Utstillingen «Luftskip og båter» på hurtigrutekaia viser lokale fiskebåter, og forteller historien om Roald Amundsen og Umberto Nobiles luftskipsferder over Nordpolen på 1920-tallet. Til museet hører også kulturparken på Vadsøya, der du blant annet finner luftskipsmasta som ble satt opp til ferdene over Nordpolen, og bosetningsspor etter det eldste Vadsø fra middelalderen.

Vadsø municipality is in a special position in Finnmark in relation to preserved older pre-war buildings. About 700 buildings survived the Second World War. The museum’s various facilities show Vadsø as fishing village, agricultural area, trade and administration city. Tuomainengården in Ytrebyen and Bietilgårdenden with quay houses in Indreby tells about the construction and culture of women. At Tuomainengården you can visit the house, barn, stable, smith, bakery and sauna all year long. At Esbensengården you can experience the 19th century trade fair and get an insight into the city’s upper class life. The coastal culture is displayed at Kjeldsenbruket on Ekkerøy, with quays, shrimps and trandamperi.
The exhibition «Airships and Boats» on the fast-paced showcase local fishing boats, and tells the story of Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile’s airships across the North Pole in the 1920s. The museum also houses the cultural park on Vadsøya, where you will find, among other things, airship masts that were set up for the journeys over the North Pole, and settlement tracks for the oldest Vadsø from the Middle Ages.
